Subject: [east] Notes on my ride home from the RCR From: "dMb" Date: Thu, 4 Jul 2002 21:03:16 -0400 To: NeDoD CC: East Now that I've had time to catch up on a few things, here are few more notes about my trip home from the RCR. In case you haven't seen 'em, the second half of http://derek.tifosi.com/nedod/rcr02 photos are from Ricketts Glen State Park. I have to go back there and visit again. I found some really obscure roads to make my way up there and beyond. On the second day of my trip home, I was still playing around in the Catskills at 5:30 p.m. when I decided it was time to head in the right direction. Having no map of the area, I just put in the home waypoint on the GPS and took a right when I was going too far north, and left if I was heading too far south. Never did hit a highway until I reach Westfield, MA, where I finally hopped on the pike. A couple of things that I discovered on the way home and are worth mentioning are: The town of Nicholson, PA. http://www.northeast.railfan.net/images/tr_nicholson.jpg Pretty cool to discover this by accident. More info at: http://www.tier.net/funfree/073098.asp Unfortunately, I was too hot, tired, and late to stop and really tour the viaduct. The town and reservoir of Neversink (gotta love that name). Cool roads. The road between Sundown, NY and W. Shokan (via Peekamoose) has roadside (CR 42) camping along the Rondout Creek (not to mention that it was an awesome road to ride, just don't blow a corner or you'll be fishing your bike out of the water below). Looks pretty neat. This isn't the first time I've seen this in the Catskills and is apparently more common than I realized. http://www.dec.state.ny.us/website/dlf/publands/cats/slide.html#Camping Looking around on the web, there's apparently a lot of hiking to be done there as well. http://catskills.hvnet.com/maps.htm The roads around Ashokan Reservoir (28A) are pretty nice too, just too many deer to make it comfortable to go around any curves at speed. I lost count of how many deer I had to dodge. I'm ready to head back to the Catskills for more exploring.
