X-Comment: East Coast Motorcyclists Mailing List FWIW, here are a couple routes I'm thinking of to the RCR from the Philly/South Jersey area. They would both do pretty well for D.C. as well, since I might jump off from a friend's house in Great Falls, Va. Anyway, there are northern and southern routes, each based on three easy, 280-mile days, little or no slab if I can help it. NORTHERN ROUTE: Starts out pretty much duplicating my route to Thurmont; leave Jersey as quickly as possible, get west of Philly and then take Pa. 372 from Downingtown to Sunnyburn; Pa. 851 and 216 to Hanover; 194 down into Md., keep going into Keymar; Md 77 on through Thurmont, continue on Md 64 into Hagerstown; pick up Alternate US 40 - in some parts it's overlaid onto the new interstate, but mostly still just parallells; head S on US 219 in Keysers Ridge; first overnight at Deep Creek Lake S.P. DAY 2, US 219 into W.Va.; at Eglon US 50 W to Grafton; US 119 S to Buckhannon; then 33 W all the way across the state to the Mason/Pomeroy crossing into Ohio; Ohio 7 S to Ironton, where it picks up US 52; probably overnight in a motel in the Ironton/Ashland Ky area. DAY 3, US 52 following the river to Aberdeen, cross into Ky at Maysville; from there, US 62 all the way down to Dawson Springs; then Ky 109 down into Pennyrile. US 62 parallells the Western Ky/Blue Grass Pkwy all the way from Lexington in case people get caught up earlier and need to make time. This route definitely looks easier/quicker, if time's a problem. SOUTHERN ROUTE: Because it's markedly longer and on smaller roads, I may start out slabbing to Charles Town, W.Va. Or I may overnight at Great Falls, like I said before. >From Charles Town, WVa 9 to Paw Paw; WVa 29 S to Augusta; US 50 W to Romney; US 220 to Big Bend campground in Seneca Rocks NRA, first overnight. DAY 2, US 220 S to Monterey; US 250 W to Huttonsville; US 219 S to Valley Head; WVa 15 W to Calvin; WVa 20 S to Charmco; cut over on US 60, picking up WVa 41 S near Clifftop; 41 down into Beckley; WVa 16 S to Corinne; WVa 10 W to Pineville; WVa 97 W to Hanover; US 52 W to Williamson, cross into Ky; US 119 S to Pineville, second overnight at Pine Mountain St. Resort Park. DAY 3, Ky 92 W to Monticello; Ky 90 W to Waterview; Ky 100 W to Russellville; then Ky 178-189-800-1348 into Pennyrile. Very few opportunities, especially in the last day, to pick up time on the slab, though if you're just desperate you can bypass the Day 3 route and hit the Daniel Boone and Cumberland Pkwys. Not just slabs, but toll (ugh!) roads. Comments, criticisms, deprecation of my parentage all welcome. ;- } Most of these roads, especially when we get beyond eastern W.Va./western Md., are unfamiliar to me; they just look good on paper.
