Subject: Back from the RCR (at last) Date: Wed, 23 Jul 1997 14:47:00 -0400 (EDT) From: Martyn Wheeler Reply-To: east@dnrc.bell-labs.com To: Multiple recipients of list Amy Spiker, Muffy, and I rolled into Apex, NC around midnight last night, exhausted after a rather longer and more eventful trip than intended... A flying spark plug changed our plans to meander along the KY/TN border, and we stuck with main roads to spend the night in Newport, TN. From there, we spent the next night in Asheville following a flat tyre. We finally left Asheville yesterday at around 4pm and rode most of the way through a foot or two of rain under enough lightning to rival the TVA in electrical output, and rolled in exhausted and wet and glad to be home. It was a good, intimate, RCR. It achieved most of what I'd aimed for -- although since I'm an organisational klutz it wasn't as spiffy and shiny as I'd wanted. I gather Josh even found some curves! Unfortunately I was far too tired myself to stay up long on Saturday night... although I did overhear the infamous "what the hell" and thus knew that next year's OomPahShip was in good hands. :-) I haven't had time to settle the finances yet, but I do know that it did not lose money, thanks mostly to the Denizens' incredible ability to pack themselves into far fewer sites than I'd expected! I am thus expecting to be able to pass some seed money onto Mike DiTullio to help reduce costs and/or upfront RCR-VII. I will wait a week or two to make sure that there's no outstanding financial committments from this one, but I'm not expecting any. Thanks to all for turning out for it, and thanks for all your support!
