It's not the midwest. As a transplant here, who initially lived in New England, I was astonished to find that Chicago was nowhere near halfway across the country. The Mississippi is actually quite far east, and to me (an opinion I picked up from other Americans, not invented myself) the midwest starts on the far side of the river. (We have rivers that big in England too -- well, just one -- we call it the English Channel :-) ). Kentucky is not a midwestern state. Kansas, Oklahoma, whatever... but Kentucky itself is no more midwest than Tennessee.
