Subject: LAST CALL and DIRECTIONS: Right Coast Ride VI Date: Tue, 8 Jul 1997 16:58:33 -0400 (EDT) From: Martyn Wheeler Reply-To: east@dnrc.bell-labs.com To: Multiple recipients of list The Sixth Annual Right Coast Ride (RCR-VI) is almost upon us: Where: Pennyrile Forest State Resort Park When: July 18-20, 1997 URL: http://www.mindspring.com/~tridod/events.htm#RCR This is the last call for registration. If you are planning to come, or don't know yet whether you'll make it, it's important you read this email all the way through to get the late registration information at the end. This is the annual east-of-the-Mississippi (only just, this year) gathering of the DoD. All are welcome (whether you have even heard of the DoD or not). It's a fun gathering of good people, and we do a whole bunch of riding on Saturday too. :-) But so those who've registered in a timely manner don't have to read that all over again :-) here's some tips that you might find useful on your way to RCR-VI... -- Interstate 40 is blocked by a mondo rockfall (to 2 lanes, I assume) at the NC/TN line, and will remain so probably for a few months. Other interstates in the area are seeing heavy delays as cagers take alternate routes. Allow for the time or take a more interesting path over the mountains. -- Pennyrile Forest State Resort Park is off Route 109 between Hopkinsville and Dawson Springs -- about 20 miles NW of Hopkinsville. -- From the south, take Alt-41 from I-24 through Hopkinsville (don't bother to get on the Pennyrile Parkway), and follow it to Rt109 North. -- From the north, pick up Rt109 South from the Western Kentucky Parkway. -- IMPORTANT!!! There are *TWO* roads marked with the park's name off Rt109. You want the northernmost one (i.e. from the north take the first one, from the south take the second). The *CORRECT* road is about 100 yards north of mile marker 29 on route 109. (The other one will work, but you'll get lost and have a Deliverance moment when you ask for directions.). -- From Rt109, continue on the road for about a mile, and take the first left (roughly opposite a church). Follow that road for a while and you'll come to the park -- the first entrance is the Lodge, the second the campground. -- If you arrive *LATE* (i.e. when you think everyone will be asleep, or if I'm not there), check in at the Lodge first. It's at the bottom of the hill, straight ahead of you from that first entrance. DO NOT PAY THE PARK for Friday or Saturday night camping!!! Just tell them you're with the Denizens of Doom Motorcycle Club, and they'll put you on my account. -- When you get the chance, please check in with me. Late registration people please bring money. ;-) I'm the one with a ponytail, a big smile (I hope!), and a red/black Moto Guzzi California 1100i (and no it won't be the only Guzzi there!). -- Yes, Virginia, we really *are* booked in as the Denizens of Doom! -- In the campground, you can obviously camp where you like. We will, however, have set up an RCR area in the vicinity of sites 25 through 37. From the campground entrance from the road, take the first left on the campground roads and keep to the left. We'll be at the top of the hill at the very far end. Once you're there, park and set up where you like. I'll be there from Wednesday. -- The area is *RURAL*. Expect farmers to pull out in front of you, if it's been raining recently resist the temptation to strafe the park roads, there may be a light dusting of fine sand in places. -- Get gas before you get to the park -- at least 20 miles before you get to the park. If your bike only goes 40 miles on a tank, you're hosed, so bring a gas can. :-) -- The park restaurant serves dinner from $6 to $12, food service 7 am-9 pm. (That's year-old price info, though.) -- The park is technically "dry", so please be reasonably discrete with alcohol. The park Superintendent assured me that if he isn't forced to notice it, he won't. Don't force him to notice it. -- If you want your own fancy beer, bring it with you. In Hopkinsville, Heineken and Lowenbrau are about as exotic as it gets. -- Dinner on Saturday is at the beach shelter (below the campground) at 7pm. Group ride planners please try to get your group back in plenty of time. PHONE NUMBER OF THE PARK: (502) 797-3421 Lastly, if there's any problems, find me or invoke my name. I'm Martyn Wheeler, with the Denizens of Doom. They'll know me quite well enough by then. ;-) LATE REGISTRATION INFORMATION: IMPORTANT NOTES: -- If you know on or before the morning of the 14th (Monday) that you're coming, email me the following information *as soon as you can*. -- After about noon EDT on the 14th there's no guarantee that the email will reach me. Call the park directly (number above) and leave a message for me, Martyn Wheeler with the Denizens of Doom, with the information. The latest I can reasonably add you to the dinner list is Thursday 5pm Central Time (6pm EDT). If all else fails, just turn up anyway. I'd rather see you make it and not tell me in advance, than not make it at all. The costs covered by the RCR are: Camping Friday night: $5/person Camping Saturday night: $5/person Dinner Saturday night: $15/person Beer surcharge: $10/beer-drinker So if you do the whole thing, it's Total (non-drinker): $25 Total (beer-drinker): $35 Bring money with you.
