Subject: ANNOUNCING -- the Sixth Annual Right Coast Ride Date: Mon, 17 Mar 1997 16:56:51 -0800 From: Martyn Wheeler Reply-To: tridod@cog.att.net What: The Sixth Annual Right Coast Ride, a.k.a. RCR-VI When: July 18-20, 1997 Where: Pennyrile State Resort Park, Dawson Springs, KY This year the RCR is moving west of the Appalachians, to western Kentucky. Although we're leaving those mountain twisties behind us for a year, many of you will be coming over the mountains on your way, and will have the opportunity to bench-race all your tales of twisty-strafing while kicking back on the beach... The park is just east of the Land Between The Lakes, in the midst of a secluded, lush forest -- surrounded by perhaps the most beautiful woods in Western Kentucky. It's located 20 miles northeast of Hopkinsville, on KY-109 near the Western Kentucky Parkway. Another difference this year is that after two years of having a whole site to ourselves, we'll be again sharing this one with other vacationers -- so I'm expecting the tone to mellow somewhat over the... um... -- _experience_ -- of RCR's IV and V. Even so, those who remember RCR-II, in a similarly-restricted location, will also remember that was the year of Tim Seiss and M'Lud showing off on BMW's, standing on the seat and climbing stairs respectively... =:-O The Denizens of Doom (oops, you'll have to kill me :-) ) will be taking over a large portion of the campground. There is only camping available at the site, but there are motels nearby (at worst, Hopkinsville is 20 miles away) for those who cannot camp. Aside from the travel costs, this RCR promises to be fairly inexpensive. Campsites are $12 for 2 adults, with $1 additional per adult beyond that. Children of 16 or younger are free. Campsites have water and electrical hookups, and I'm expecting we'll fit (at least :-) ) two bike-sized tents in each site, so camping will be cheap. You'll pay for camping yourselves at the site. Saturday dinner, as per tradition, will be the RCR awards/party. We have the beach shelter reserved for us that night. Costs of the meal have not yet been determined (I'll be discussing menus when I visit in the next month or two) but I'm expecting it to be under $10/person if we have the park cater it. Likewise beer costs have yet to be estimated. Food/drink money will be called for in advance as the date approaches. That brings up another point: *technically* the park is dry, i.e. no alcohol. I have, however, discussed this with the park Superintendent, and in practice provided we are reasonably discrete and don't act like drunken idiots, there's no problem. This is, after all, Kentucky, home of the drive-through moonshine stills... ;-) The park itself offers quite a few facilities... if there was ever an RCR that offered family activities, this is it -- so don't hand us the "I can't come, what would I do with the children?" line. :-) Check out this URL for park details: http://www.state.ky.us/agencies/parks/pennyril.htm I know that it will be a lot longer trip for most folks to the RCR this year than in previous years... but think of the ride there as part of the event. Many of us will be taking two days to travel, and that brings the opportunity to meet up on the road with other groups of Denizens, and start the party well before reaching the RCR. :-) This post is also a first call for names/bikes/how-many from those who are planning to come. Please email me -- sasmjw@unx.sas.com -- if you are one of those folks. Likewise, questions can be addressed to me at that email address. IMPORTANT NOTE: The Right Coast Ride, although called a _DoD_ event, is open to all. ALL ARE WELCOME -- you do *not* have to have a DoD number to attend, you don't have to present the secret handshake, you don't have to quote a Henry Pasternack post or be able to spell Laszslzo. It's an event for all of us: new riders, experienced riders, students, old phartes, the sheer diversity of the group is all part of the fun. So if you're wondering whether you should come, the answer is a resounding "YES!" The Right Coast Ride itself started in 1992, when a number of right-coast denizens decided that we all needed an event in the spirit of the Joust, the Ride'N'Feed, and so on. It has been to North Carolina twice (RCR-I & III), Maryland twice (RCR-IV & V), and West Virginia (RCR-II). It's an excuse for all of us to get together in person, meet face-to-face the folks we've been flami^H^H^H^H^Htalking to all year, with no other reason needed than "we ride." There is a mailing list dedicated primarily to the RCR, for information, for arranging rides and meeting places, and so on; if you're interested in the event, you should probably join that list. The "east" list may be joined by sending a message to: listproc@dnrc.bell-labs.com with the message body: subscribe east e.g. I would say subscribe east Martyn Wheeler There is a digest mode, which many folks prefer (including the listadmin, it cuts down on traffic through his machine). To do this, once you're subscribed, send a message to the listserver (as above) with the message body set east mail digest So this is the first announcement for RCR-VI. Tell your friends, tell your family, tell your boss, and plan for Kentucky in July. See you there!
