Martyn's Opinion

General Comments

Unfortunately the changes in tyre specification for the Honda CBX, starting with the 1981 model year, really messed up tyre availability.  The matched sets that are available in the stock size are limited to low-price tyres only and, with the exception of the Bridgestone SE11, they're not really up to handling the load and performance potential of this bike.  That means that to find any better tyres for this bike, we have to look outside the stock size and go for a shorter 80-series profile in the rear.  This will have the effect of reducing ground clearance slightly, and making the steering geometry a bit slower too, but those penalties are more than offset by being able to fit some really good tyres.  You will note that Bridgestone and Metzeler agree...

The Safe Bet

Brand Model Size MAW
Front Bridgestone SE11 100/90H-19 $76
Rear Bridgestone SE11 130/90H-18 $94

Obviously the safe bet is to go for one of the pairs that is really the stock size.  This is the best of the three for the CBX, and will work well enough... provided you keep a light hand on the throttle.

A Tight Budget

Brand Model Size MAW
Front Dunlop K591 Sport Touring 100/90V-19 $68
Rear Kenda K657 Sport Challenger 130/90H-18 $55

If you need to save money, there's no better value than the Kenda rear.  It lasts reasonably well, sticks adequately in wet or dry, and works well with almost any front.  I wouldn't put a Kenda front on this bike, but substituting the Dunlop K591 doesn't cost much more and will provide more confidence.  The catch is that the K591 doesn't last very long, but being on the front that's less of a problem.

General Purpose, Sport-Touring

Brand Model Size MAW
Front Dunlop K591 Sport Touring 100/90V-19 $68
Rear Dunlop K591 Sport Touring 130/80V-18 $80

With the recent drop in price of Dunlops, especially the bias-ply tyres, the Dunlop K591 stands out as a very good tyre for not much cost.  The only catch is the tread life, which is fairly short, but with the good traction and low cost Dunlop have just priced themselves into this slot.

Touring

Brand Model Size MAW
Front Bridgestone BT17 Sports Mileage 100/90V-19
Rear Bridgestone BT17 Sports Mileage 130/80V-18 $110

Unfortunately, none of the real touring tyres are available for this bike even when looking at an alternate rear.  Of those tyres that are available, at least these dual-compound Bridgestones have a touring compound in the centre of the tread.  Although the Safe Bet SE11's would work too, I'd be a lot happier with a more capable set than those -- like these BT17's, which are a sport-touring tyre designed to work on larger motorcycles like the CBX.

Sport-Riding

Brand Model Size MAW
Front Avon Super Venom AM20 100/90V-19 $107
Rear Avon Super Venom AM18 130/80V-18 $117

For Sport-Riding there's basically two serious choices for this bike: the Dunlop K591, and the Avon Super Venoms.  Of those, I prefer the latter -- they'll stick very well on this bike, handle well, and bring out the best in the bike.

Martyn's Choice

Brand Model Size MAW
Front Dunlop K591 Sport Touring 100/90V-19 $68
Rear Dunlop K591 Sport Touring 130/80V-18 $80

For me this is a hard choice between the Dunlop K591, the Pirelli Match and the Avon Super Venom.  In the end, even though the Avons will stick better, and the Pirelli's last longer, I'd go with the much lower cost of the Dunlops.
